Cosmetic Dentistry For Those Who Fear The Dentist

Wednesday, September 09, 2015

Lots of people dislike going to the dentist but for about 5% of the population the fear prevents them from seeking the care they need, or want. Dental care that we want usually falls under the heading of cosmetic dentistry - this means using dental veneers, crowns and bleaching to give you a more beautiful smile. Can people who fear the dentist get cosmetic dental treatment?

Of course they can!

Patients with milder types of dental fear often find that their fear has disappeared once they form a relationship with a dentist that they feel comfortable with. Other patients need mild medication to allow them to relax during their appointments.

Cosmetic dental treatments can be life-changing. For those in jobs that require public contact a beautiful smile can enhance the ability to close a sale. We see patients shave facial hair that they have worn for years in order to show off their new, confident smile.

Cosmetic dental treatments range from simple whitening procedures to full-mouth restorations - most cases fall on the more conservative end of the spectrum.

Find out what cosmetic dentistry can do for you and your smile, despite your dental fears.

Zoom! Whitening For A Brighter Smile

Thursday, April 23, 2015

Is the bright, white smile of a few years ago only a memory? You can get that white smile back in a couple of hours using the Zoom! whitening system.

Almost anyone can benefit from a whiter smile. Just this small change in your appearance can make you look younger and more vibrant. While a whiter smile looks great on everyone - only your dentist can decide if you are a candidate for Zoom! whitening.

Patients with yellow staining from soda, tea, wine, coffee, tobacco use, or simply getting older will see terrific results when they whiten their teeth. Gray staining from tetracycline or other chemicals is more difficult to bleach but may see some improvement. Dental veneers are a great option for making over a smile that has been damaged by antibiotic use.

It took time for your teeth to become stained, and, over time they will probably become stained again. You can maintain your bright, white smile over time by using custom take home bleaching trays and professional strength gel that we can supply.

Brighten your look! Contact our office today at 561-394-9000 and ask Samantha to schedule your Zoom! whitening appointment.

Do Home Whitening Kits Work?

Saturday, September 07, 2013

You have been thinking about whitening your teeth and, with all the whitening treatments available, trying to figure out if home whitening might work for you.

Many people now choose to bypass professional whitening treatments with their dentists to rid themselves of any stains or imperfections and try a DIY approach. Although many home whitening kits, gels, and strips, are safe to use, they are not the always the best option.

Let’s take a look at the most important things to know before using a DIY whitening treatment.
  • Gum disease or sensitivity? Then at-home whitening treatments are not a good choice. Only use an at-home treatment if you already have relatively good dental health. If you have dental issues such as receding gums, cavities, or sensitive oral tissue, these issues can be aggravated by using a bleaching treatment.
  • Dental Work? If you have veneers or crowns in the front of your mouth, remember that they will not bleach!
  • What time of staining do you have? Only a dental professional can tell you if the type of staining you have will react well to bleaching.
  • Read the labels carefully. Many DIY whitening treatments contain high amounts of bleach and peroxide. High concentrations of these chemicals cause irritation to the gums and can erode tooth enamel. These chemicals are most commonly found in inexpensive whitening treatments, so it is important to buy a product from a reputable company or brand that you trust.
  • Choose strips, not trays. Many home whitening kits come with dental trays that do not adhere poorly to your teeth. The chemical solution can easily leak out of these trays, and into your mouth. Swallowing bleach or peroxide can be extremely hazardous to your health, not to mention damaging to your mouth. This same warning goes for the "bleaching" kiosks at the mall! Using dental whitening strips, which adhere to the teeth more firmly to the teeth, are usually a better option than a whitening tray.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant. It is almost always inevitable that the some chemicals in the kits will be swallowed during use, and these chemicals can be extremely dangerous and cause unknown risks to the fetus.
  • 'Old fashioned treatments' are still effective. Perhaps the safest way to whiten your teeth at home is simply by brushing. Most toothpastes now contain whitening agents, which buff away surface stains, leaving your teeth white and smooth.
Home whitening treatments can be effective for some types of staining. However, the safest way to obtain a vibrant, stain-free smile is to have a whitening treatment done by your dentist. Whether you opt for custom whitening trays to use at home or Zoom! one hour whitening, your smile will be more youthful and bright.

Whiter, Brighter Smiles Help You Look Younger

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Are your teeth as bright and white as they used to be? As we age our teeth naturally stain and yellow. Smoking and drinking cola, coffee, tea, and red wine also lead to tooth discoloration.

That stained smile make us look older - but  whitening your smile is a great way to look younger and more vibrant. There are so many teeth whitening options on the market today, how do you pick the one that is right for you?

I really like two different options. The Zoom! whitening system is used widely throughout the country and  gives you a whiter smile in about an hour. Another option which takes a little more time but offers better control over your whitening are whitening trays.

Bleaching trays allow the patient complete control over the whitening process. We begin by taking impressions of your teeth and creating custom bleaching trays. Prescription strength bleaching gel is placed in the trays and they are worn by the patient for up to an hour per day until the desired level of bleaching has been achieved. As an added plus, you can always "touch up" your bleaching by using the trays when you start to feel your smile fading.

Before you can begin any whitening treatment we need to look at your teeth. This examination will  help us determine which whitening treatment is best for you. A small number of patients have a type of tooth discoloration that cannot be bleached away and will require dental veneers to achieve a bright, white smile. Also, if you have any dental work like veneers or crowns in the front of your mouth you need to know that these restorations WILL NOT bleach.

You also need very clean teeth to begin bleaching so a dental hygiene visit should be scheduled before your whitening appointment. We'll be happy to arrange both when you contact Boca Raton cosmetic dentist Dr. Kenneth Mogell at 561-394-9000.
