Save Money By Taking Care of your TeethMonday, January 26, 2009
With the downturn in the economy everyone is looking for places to save money. There are some things that produce short-term savings but in the long run cost us more money. Getting rid of your collision coverage on the car might save a few dollars now but when somebody hits your car in a parking lot and leaves you'll be out of pocket for the repairs. The same goes for keeping your hygiene and dental appointments. Turns out that healthy teeth and gums and save you 21% on your medical costs.A study, conducted in Japan, examined the effect of periodontal disease on medical and dental costs for patients. The study was conducted over a 3 1/2 year period and the patients were between the ages of 40-59. Periodontal, or gum diseases have been linked to systemic health conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems and complications in pregnancy.
The researchers discovered that health care costs were 21% higher for the patients with severe periodontal disease than those without. While most studies have looked at health links between oral health and other medical conditions, this is the first to analyze the financial impact of poor oral hygiene.
"Everyone is looking for ways to reduce health care costs," said Susan Karabin, DDS, President of the American Academy of Periodontology. Especially those who are in an age category where they are more susceptible to periodontal diseases. Because of the relationship between the mouth and the rest of the body, treating periodontal disease may be one simple way to decrease total health care costs. If caught early, periodontal diseases can be treated using simple non-surgical techniques which can restore your mouth to a healthy state
Talk to our hygienist about your treatment options if you are diagnosed with gum disease. Early and effective treatment now can save you in health care costs down the road. Call our office at 561-394-9000 to find out more. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.

I have drink a lot of coffee and it’s hard to keep my teeth from staining… I wish I would’ve seen this first because I think I tried 1,000 things before I finally found something that worked for me.
