Dental Veneers Let You SmileMonday, February 18, 2013
I love doing cosmetic dentistry and especially cases that involve dental veneers. Why? Because these amazing little pieces of porcelain can actually change people's lives! I have seen patients shave off the mustache, change their hairstyle, go out and get new jobs - all because they felt more comfortable smiling and laughing in public.
Dental veneers are also sometimes called porcelain veneers or porcelain laminates. There are also some that are "name brands" from specific dental labs that have been marketed to the public. They are all basically wafer-thin, custom shells of tooth colored material that cover the front surface of the teeth to improve appearance of the tooth. Dental veneers are bonded to the existing tooth and can be used to change the color, shape, size or length of the tooth. They are made of porcelain or resin composite materials. They mimic the light reflecting properties and coloring of natural teeth so no one will know you have dental veneers. They look like natural teeth - or what you've always wanted your natural teeth to look like!
We use dental veneers on a routine basis to correct:
- Discolored teeth - Some dental staining can't be bleached away, this includes staining from medications or excessive fluoride. Dental veneers can cover the stained teeth and give a bright, white smile.
- Teeth that are worn or chipped - Using dental veneers to repair chipped or worn teeth is a much longer lasting repair than bonding the chip with tooth colored filling material.
- Crooked or misaligned teeth - We call this "instant orthodontics" and using dental veneers we are able to make that crooked smile look straight.
- Repair gaps between teeth or make tiny teeth look bigger - Gaps between teeth are kind of trendy for models right now but for the rest of us the gap just doesn't look right. Veneers can easily close the gap. Some people are born with certain teeth that are undersized and these too can be made to look perfect using veneers.
The first step in your cosmetic dentistry case will involve a consultation where we discuss what you don't like about your smile and what you hope to achieve. Your teeth will be examined to make sure you are a candidate for dental veneers.
At your next appointment we will prepare your teeth for the veneers by removing a small amount of enamel from the front surface of the tooth, which is about the same thickness as the dental veneer itself. Impressions of the prepared teeth are taken and sent to a dental laboratory. Temporary veneers are placed which will give you a good idea of how your final veneers will look. In a week or so your case will be back from the laboratory and the permanent dental veneers bonded into place. You get to go home with a beautiful new smile.
