High Blood Pressure Related to Sleep ProblemsFriday, September 28, 2012
Sleep problems that results in poor sleep quality double the risk that women will have high blood pressure that is resistant to medication.
Dr. Rosa Maria Bruno who presented the Italian study said "There is lots of evidence that sleep disorders are related to cardiovascular events, but most relate to sleep-disordered breathing such as sleep apnea. Also there have been many studies showing an association between short sleep duration and the incidence of cardiovascular events or hypertension. But we looked at whether insomnia was linked to the severity of hypertension, and we found poor sleep quality was significantly more prevalent in patients with resistant hypertension."
The researchers found a large difference between men and women and they reported that the quality of sleep rather than the duration seemed to be the important factor.
Women may experience more sleep problems related to anxiety and depression. Hormonal changes may disrupt sleep during certain stages of life and family pressures may also affect sleep.
If you are experiencing high blood pressure that is not responding to treatment you may want to look at your sleeping habits.
