Your Dental Health and Smoking
We are all well aware of the potential health risks involved with the use of tobacco products. You can rarely spend any time in front of a television without seeing a commercial that warns you of the consequences of smoking cigarettes. The advertisers do a great job informing us about the threat of tobacco use and how it affects various parts of our bodies, but I haven’t heard them discuss the influence that tobacco products have on the mouth.
Short of the obvious, tobacco products can cause oral cancer. It has been well documented that dipping or chewing tobacco increases the chances of oral cancer occurring. But there are other problems that smoking can cause. The risk of contracting cancer of the mouth is four times higher for a smoker than for a non-smoker. This is why at every appointment we screen for oral cancer and annually encourage a more comprehensive screening for oral cancer.
Cigarette smoke has many affects on your gums; it delays the healing of wounds, and stains the teeth.
Anyone can suffer from periodontal disease, but smoking increases the risk. Heavy smokers are six times more likely to suffer from periodontal disease than non-smokers.
Your over all health is important to us, not just your teeth! If it has been a while since your last oral examination, please call us to schedule an appointment.
We can be reached at 561-394-9000. We want to make sure you remain as healthy as possible. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
Periodontal Diease and Endometriosis

Association between endometriosis and periodontal disease?Okay so periodontal disease is an infection of the gums and the jaw bones. So why do researchers at the University of Michigan Health System see a connection between periodontal disease and endometriosis?
Dr. Dan I. Lebovic and his colleagues believe that the development of endometriosis is "a defect in the immune system's ability to clear retrograde menstrual flow." The connection…autoimmunity has also been implicated in the development of periodontal disease.
The study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility examined the association between endometriosis and periodontal disease. From 1999 to 2004 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey showed that women with endometriosis had a 57% increased risk of periodontal disease as opposed to those women who did not have gynecological condition.
Dr. Lebovic noted that endometriosis may also "be augmented by an immune response to an infectious agent", periodontal pathogens.
More motivation for maintaining a healthy mouth!
If you have any questions about periodontal disease and how it can affect your overall health, please do not hesitate to contact us at 561-394-9000. We will arrange an appointment to perform a comprehensive examination and help you get on your way to a healthier mouth and healthier life! Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
