Do you get Canker sores?Wednesday, December 15, 2010
Canker SoresA canker sore is a shallow sore in your mouth that can be painful. Canker sores are also known as apthous ulcers. They are small sores that occur inside the mouth. You can also get them on your tongue and on the inside of the cheek and lips. They usually pop up alone, but sometimes they show up in a small cluster.
You may feel a tingle or burn before the actual sore appears. A small red bump rises, and then it bursts, leaving an open, shallow white or yellowish wound with a red border. This sore is usually painful.
Canker sores are not contagious. You can cannot spread canker sores by kissing someone, or sharing food. One thing that doctors have noticed is that, they can run in families. That means if your parents or siblings get canker sores, the genes you share with them make it more likely that you'll develop the sores too.
There is a connection between canker sores and stress. Twice as many women as men get them, due to the difference in hormones. Dietary deficiencies, such as not enough iron or vitamin B12, may also contribute to some cases of canker sores.
Most canker sores will heal on their own in a few days to a couple of weeks. Various over the counter medicines can help. Watch what you eat. Stay away from spicy foods and acidic foods. Be careful when you brush your teeth. It’s important that you keep your mouth clean. And have your dentist look at it to make sure that it is truly a canker sore. Your dentist may prescribe a topical medicine or special mouthwash to help heal the sores. If you have any question about canker sores, please give us a call at 561-394-9000, we will arrange an appointment to help address your concerns. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.

Cell Phones Can Affect Your Sleep
There has been many a controversy over the past few years regarding cell phones and the radiation they emit.
No one has been able to produce definitive information that has affected the cell phone habits of most individuals. Now a study has come to light performed by scientists at the Karolinska Institute and Uppsala University and Wayne State University in Detroit that demonstrated that cell phone usage before going to sleep could be affecting our sleep quality.
This study showed that people who use their cell phones just before going to sleep took longer to get into deep sleep and they spent less time in this important stage of sleeping. The deep sleep stage is where growth and rejuvenation of tissues occurs. These patients also reported an increased amount of headaches in comparison with the control group.
This study reminds us that there are many factors in our lifestyle that can alter the important elements of our sleep cycles. The authors encourage that one should avoid using a cell phone directly before going to sleep and that the phone should not be kept directly at the bedside.
If you have any further questions about the quality of your sleep, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 561-705-5252. We will arrange an appointment to insure that you are getting a good night’s sleep. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
