Floss for Your Health
Just about every time you go to have your teeth cleaned by your dental hygienist you leave with that smooth polished feeling on your teeth. Most offices will provide their patient’s with a toothbrush, a tube of toothpaste and that darn floss that so many people hate!
I will admit that I am not the best flosser, but I have gotten much better and I should. Why? According to the American Academy of Periodontology, research has been shown that you are twice as likely to have coronary artery disease when periodontal disease is present.
Periodontal disease is for the most part asymptomatic. If you are experiencing pain from periodontal disease the disease has become chronic and much more difficult to resolve. Obviously the message from your hygienist and your dentist to take better care of your teeth and gums between dental visits extends well beyond your teeth.
If you are uncomfortable with flossing here’s some suggestions that may get you onto the flossing party.
Flossing forks, which can be bought at the dollar store, are a great way to begin the habit of flossing regularly. They are easy to use, no winding floss around your fingers or getting saliva all over them.
Find a time where it is convenient to floss such as while watch television or just before you go to sleep.
If you have any questions about your oral hygiene please give us a call at 561-394-9000. We will be glad to answer your questions and make you an appointment to get your teeth and gums on the road to a healthier place! Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
