Are root canals as painful?Tuesday, August 24, 2010
Are Root Canals Painful?
While giving his State of the Union speech, President Obama made a comparison of the popularity of the bank bailout to getting a root canal. Ouch is right, but not about getting a root canal.
Most root canal procedures are marginalized by our society as comedic scenes for a television show or movie.
They portray the dentist as the “evil” one inflicting pain upon their poor suffering victim. But a 2009 consumer survey showed that an “overwhelming majority of root canal patients use positive words to describe the experience.” Let’s be honest, most people don’t necessarily want to share the embarrassing fact that they may have neglected their teeth to the point of needing a root canal. In other words the good ones aren’t discussed, just the bad. Think about it, how many of your friends in conversation tell you about how “great a root canal I had today!”
Moral of the story as always, take care of your teeth and they will tend to take care of you unlike your banks! If you should have any questions regarding root canal therapy, please do not hesitate to give out office a call at 561-394-9000. We will arrange an appointment that works best with your schedule. Is Snoring Just Snoring?
Tuesday, August 17, 2010
Snoring Can Be More Than Just Snoring!Snoring in of itself can be annoying, frustrating and obviously noisy! The comedic aspects of snoring are often highlighted in movies or television; the seriousness of the snoring often made to seem minimal. Snoring can be but a small role in the bigger picture of one’s health in the form of Sleep Apnea. But just how does one know if they are experiencing this potentially fatal illness or just plain ol’ snoring?
Ask yourself; are you unusually sleepy during the day? This could be a sign that your snoring is more than just snoring. Take the Epworth Sleepiness Scale! This is a standard series of questions that are widely used to see how your sleep affects your daily life. It will evaluate how likely you are to fall asleep in certain situations.
Keep in mind that the quality of your sleep has an impact on many aspects of your life and overall health. Sleep apnea has been directly related to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other diseases.
Treatment no longer means being strapped with a mask to your face and being hooked up to a CPAP machine. There are other options including the utilization of oral appliances to help manage one’s sleep apnea.
If you have any questions regarding snoring, sleep apnea and the management of the disease, please do not hesitate to call us. We can be reached at 561-705-5252. We will arrange for an appointment to help you find the best means to help you once again have a healthy nights rest. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
Floss for Your Health

Floss for Your Health
Just about every time you go to have your teeth cleaned by your dental hygienist you leave with that smooth polished feeling on your teeth. Most offices will provide their patient’s with a toothbrush, a tube of toothpaste and that darn floss that so many people hate!
I will admit that I am not the best flosser, but I have gotten much better and I should. Why? According to the American Academy of Periodontology, research has been shown that you are twice as likely to have coronary artery disease when periodontal disease is present.
Periodontal disease is for the most part asymptomatic. If you are experiencing pain from periodontal disease the disease has become chronic and much more difficult to resolve. Obviously the message from your hygienist and your dentist to take better care of your teeth and gums between dental visits extends well beyond your teeth.
If you are uncomfortable with flossing here’s some suggestions that may get you onto the flossing party.
Flossing forks, which can be bought at the dollar store, are a great way to begin the habit of flossing regularly. They are easy to use, no winding floss around your fingers or getting saliva all over them.
Find a time where it is convenient to floss such as while watch television or just before you go to sleep.
If you have any questions about your oral hygiene please give us a call at 561-394-9000. We will be glad to answer your questions and make you an appointment to get your teeth and gums on the road to a healthier place! Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
Should you bone graft an extraction site?

Extractions and Bone Grafts
Unfortunately sometimes whether out of neglect, trauma or just things happening, a tooth may need to be extracted. A tooth extraction is not uncommon and a routine procedure. A tooth rests in a socket and is surrounded by gum tissue and bone. When a tooth is extracted the bone and gum tissue naturally collapse.
In order to prevent this caving in that patients often refer to a bone graft is placed in the socket at the time of extraction. This is done to rebuild the bone where extraction has left an empty weakened area.
Grafting materials may enhance regeneration of natural bone and maintain the original shape and size of the jaw to maintain the bone should a patient elect to have an implant placed at a future appointment.
There are several type of bone used for grafting. The best is always going to be you own bone, autogenous grafts. There are also specially treated bone grafts that are obtained from cadavers, allografts. Then there are Xenografts which are obtained, after appropriate preparation, from another species such as a cow.
Bone grafts are the state of the art for preserving the jaw bone after having a tooth removed. If you have any questions regarding the process of bone grafts and extractions, please do not hesitate to give us a call at 561-394-9000. We will be glad to help you understand your options when it involves these important decisions. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
