Oral appliances generally have a high degree a patient compliance, low risk and are extremely effective in treating mild to moderate obstructive sleep disorders.
Most importantly and regardless of your choice for treating your sleep disorder is to do something. Make an appointment for a sleep study! They now can be done in the comfort of your own bed. Find out if you are at risk!

TMJ and Earaches
Wednesday, July 22, 2009
Why is it so often that we hear from patient's that they go to their Ear, Nose & Throat doctors complaining of an earaches only to be told.. there is nothing wrong with your ears? The next logical place for the physicians to look for a diagnosis is in the temporomandibular joint.
Why?
For one thing there is a direct connect of ligaments, arteries and nerves that travel from the area within the temporomandibular joint into the ear. The ear and the temporomandibular joint are only separated by a thin bone called the tympanic bone.
If one begins to experience deterioration of the structures within the temporomandibular joint, the body in its endeavors to compensate for this weakening will attempt to realign itself using the musculature of the head and neck placing stress on all anatomical structures within the temporomandibular joint including those directly connected to the ear. This can impede oxygen carrying blood flow or impinge nerves causing the sensation of pain in the ear.
Early diagnosis and treatment is imperative if alleviation of the symptoms is to occur. If you should be experiencing ear pain that has not responded to conventional medical treatment, please give us a call at 561-394-9000. We can arrange for a consultation to determine if your pain is in fact originating from your temporomandibular joint.
Hurt Your Jaw Joint?

Conservative Temporomandibular Joint TreatmentHave you ever been chewing and hurt your temporomandibular joint? How about waking up in the morning and your teeth are sore as well as your temporomandibular joint from clenching and grinding? Well here are a couple of suggestions that can help to conservative treat the sensitive injury.
Usually the pain is inflammation in its origin, sort of microscopic swelling. If you can take Ibuprofen, it is a great aid in reducing that "swelling". Applying an ice pack to the area of pain can help as well. Put the ice on for no more than 20 minutes at a time. If the pain lingers, treat the injury like a sprained ankle or knee; "do not run on it". When you eat hard foods, chew gum or ice and yawn widely you are proverbially running on your temporomandibular joint. The rule of thumb is a non-chew soft diet for two weeks to allow the area to heal.
TMJ injuries can become chronic in their nature if they are not treated when they initially occur. If you have any questions regarding TMJ disorder and how to treat them, please give us a call at 561-394-9000. We will be glad to arrange a consultation appointment to review your concerns. Maximize Whitening Your Teeth
Monday, July 20, 2009
Recently there have been many questions about achieving the best result from whitening your teeth, otherwise commonly called bleaching.
It is very important to remember that while you are bleaching your teeth stay away from food and drinks that stain. If it would permanently stain your blouse or shirt, it's a no-no and will stain your teeth.
Be sure to brush your teeth just prior to placing your tray in your mouth. The proteins in your saliva coat your teeth and can inhibit the bleaching process.
Be sure that when you are not wearing your bleaching trays that they are washed and stored in the case provided. Dogs just love bleaching trays; they think they are chew toys and they destroy them in a moment.
When you are not using your bleaching material be sure to keep it refrigerated to enhance it freshness. Heat will tend to prematurely lessen the effectiveness of the material.
If you are prone to sensitivity while wearing your trays, if you are not allergic or sensitive to Ibuprofen, taking one tab before a hour before beginning a whitening session.
Whitening your teeth can be extremely satisfying and is a great confidence booster. You look better... you feel better! If you have any questions about whitening your teeth please do not hesitate to contact us at 561-394-9000.
Is there a relationship between Obesity & Periodontal Disease
Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Connection between Obesity and Periodontal Disease? The Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Puerto Rico have been conducting a study for 16 years to assess if there is an association between obesity and periodontal disease. The study involved close to 37,000 men from 1986 until 2002.
The results noted "clear evidence" obesity occurring prior to the onset of periodontal disease and "supports" a relationship between obesity and the risk of periodontal disease.
This the first such study of a large group of people over an extended period of time that show the importance of regular dental hygiene visits to promote periodontal health. If you haven't been seen recently to have your teeth cleaned and examined, please call use at 561-394-9000 to arrange an appointment. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
