I have read many an article about periodontal disease and the impact it can have on your over all health. We have know for quite some time that periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and low birth weight babies. Now researchers at the Bikur Holim Hospital, Jerusalem, and the Hebrew University Hadassah School of Dental Medicine have reported in as study that low sperm count could be associated with periodontal disease.
The study showed that half the men in their study suffered from periodontal disease to different degrees and two thirds of these men had low sperm counts.
Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation noted that

Pure Power Mouthguard Explosion
Thursday, March 19, 2009
to announce that Dr. Kenneth A. Mogell has joined the team.
Dr. Mogell has been named a PPM Certified Dentist. He joins over 300 neuromuscular
dentists worldwide who are offering the PPM. Dr. Mogell, who is also a graduate of the
Las Vegas Institute (LVI) for Advanced Dentistry, is now offering the PPM at his
practice for athletes seeking a real edge in sports.
Over 90% of the population has an overbite, and one of the negative effects of an
overbite is that it causes muscle tension, says Dr. Mogell. When the neck and jaw
muscles are tense, the body can't perform at its peak. Strength is lost and balance is
diminished. So on the most basic level, what the PPM does is allow the body to perform
at its absolute peak, in a purely natural way.
Athletes are fitted with the device through a K-7 machine and other sophisticated
computer technology. Once the correct bite is discovered a mold is made and sent off to
the lab for production. There are two PPMs: one for upper teeth and one for lower teeth.
Rutgers University, one of the most esteemed research institutions in the world, recently
conducted a research study on the PPM and concluded that the device works and is a true
benefit for athletes seeking a real edge in sports a natural one that is.
Notable athletes using the PPM include: Shaq O'Neil (Suns), Manny Ramirez (LA
Dodgers), Michael Redd (Bucks), Josh Brown (St. Louis Rams), Michael Turner (Atlanta
Falcons), Scott McCarron (PGA) and Steve Elkington (PGA).
There are currently over 300 professional athletes are using the PPM, with representation
in Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the
National Hockey League (NHL), the National Football League (NFL), and most sports in
the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As well, there are over 1,000
collegiate, Olympic and amateur athletes who have embraced the PPM phenomenon.
To get your edge in sports, you can contact Dr. Mogell at 561-394-9000 to schedule an appointment for your PPM.
Monkey see, monkey do.....
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
If a Monkey can do it....You know that saying "I could train a monkey to do it". Well it turns out that monkeys are have been observed showing their young to - of all things - floss!
Professor Nobuo Masataka of Kyoto University and his team of researchers observed how female long=tailed macaques and their offspring often cleaned the spaces between their teeth with strands of human hair. The mom monkeys flossed twice as often and more deliberately when the baby monkeys were watching them. Professor Masataka says that this behavior suggested that the females were deliberatively teaching their young to floss! It seems that even macaques understand the importance of a healthy mouth.
One the biggest challenges we have as dentists and hygienists is motivating our patients to be diligent in their flossing habits. So if a monkey can be trained....
Fruit Can Prevent Cavities!
Tuesday, March 17, 2009
It turns out that these sweet treats contain an element called fluorine - which sounds like what it is - a relative of fluoride. We all know that fluoride can help strengthen tooth enamel which protects against dental caries.
Raisins may also be good for your teeth because the phytochemicals in these fruits appear to inhibit the growth of certain kinds of bacteria in your mouth. They also appear to help keep the bacteria from sticking to your teeth.
My wife loves to snack on dates that she keeps in the fridge. Just watch out for pits - even though the box says pitted they may have missed one or two. You can also chop up some dates to sprinkle over a salad or your morning oatmeal. Same goes for raisins. A big plus: they also provide you with fiber, vitamins, minerals and amino acids. No other sticky sweet snack can supply that!
Go ahead and enjoy - in moderation of course - you'll be doing your teeth a favor. Just remember that brushing and FLOSSING are the most important thing you can do to protect your healthy smile. Please call us at 561-394-9000 to arrange for your next cleaning and examination.
Life got you clenching?
Wednesday, March 11, 2009
The economy affects us in many different ways, physically, psychologically and in ways that we may not even be aware of. The tension that accompanies these wildly unpredictable times can be transmitted directly to your teeth. Stressful situation will in many cases promote clenching and grinding of our teeth, bruxism. This will generate and transmit abnormal forces directly to your teeth. The impact of bruxism can cause irregular wear on your teeth and could even result in a tooth fracturing! You could develop a TMJ disorder as a result of bruxism. Do you wake up with sore teeth or sore muscles? These could be signs that you are experiencing grinding or clenching of your teeth while you sleep. Bruxism doesn't just occur at night while you sleep as most people believe. Many of us grind our teeth while going about our normal daily activities.
So what can you do to protect your teeth from the consequences of bruxism? During your waking hours, try and be mindful of the grinding. Biofeedback can be effective in breaking the habit by bring it to a conscious level. We do have some skills we can teach you on how to address bruxism during the day. When addressing clenching and grinding at night it is a little more difficult. The most successful way to treat bruxism during sleep is to wear an orthotic appliance that many people refer to as a "nightguard". This is a custom made hard plastic device that is worn over your lower teeth. The dentist precisely adjusts the way your teeth meet when wearing the "nightguard" so that you achieve a near perfect bite. Bottom line, it is better to wear the plastic down then to cause irreversible wear on your teeth. If you are experiencing the symptoms of bruxism, please call our office to arrange an examination to determine if you can benefit from a "nightguard".

Green Tea...Happy Teeth?
Tuesday, March 10, 2009
The Journal of Periodontology recently published a study that found that the routine intake of green tea may promote the health of teeth and gums.
The author of the study, Dr. Yoshihiro Shimazaki of Kyushu University in Japan examined 940 men and found those who drank green tea have significantly better dental health. The researchers were able to conclude that for every cup of green tea consumed there was a decrease in the various clinical signs of periodontal disease.
There are so many factors that have an impact on our overall health. This study demonstrates again that the foods we eat can play a significant role in our well being.
If you have not had a complete dental examination within the last two years, please call our office to schedule an appointment. Regular dental checks up are necessary to maintain your ultimate dental health.

High Tech in Dentistry!
Monday, March 09, 2009
High tech equipment is becoming more widespread in dentistry than ever before. One important high tech tool that has had a major impact in our office is the utilization of a digital camera. With a digital camera we get the immediate gratification of instant photos giving us access to a tremendous amount of information. Magnifying a photo on a 42 inch monitor allows us to see all aspects of an area that could never be done with the naked eye or even with magnifying loupes!
How does this benefit you the patient, with this information we are able to diagnose dental disease more accurately. The magnification of the photographs also provides a chance for patient's to see what the dental team is seeing. We feel sharing of information and educating our clients is of supreme importance to providing the patient with the opportunity to be involved in the decision making process which will ultimately lead to best dental care that is possible.
Preventing dental disease is our primary objective; please call our office to schedule a comprehensive examination to ensure your long term dental health.
We can be reached at 561-394-9000, thank you for allowing us to have a role in your dental health.

Is Your Favorite Soda Hurting Your Teeth?
Wednesday, March 04, 2009
Did you have that soda with lunch? How about the big glass of OJ for breakfast? The average soft drink is 20 ounces and contains 17 teaspoons of sugar. Some of the citric acids found in fruit juice and soft drinks are more erosive that sulfuric acid. Both of these common beverages can cause tooth erosion, a process that destroys the enamel of your teeth. Once your tooth enamel is lost, it can't be regained. However there are some things that you can do to help save your enamel
When deciding between the many options available, the best thing to drink to avoid tooth erosion is brewed tea, according to a study in General Dentistry, the clinical, peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).
Brewed tea, either hot or iced tastes great and has many other health benefits. Tea is loaded with natural antioxidants, which are thought to decrease incidence of cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.
The study found that the erosive effect of tea was similar to that of water, which has no effect. And, when comparing green tea versus black tea, the difference is clear. Studies in Japan and Europe have shown that green tea has more flavonoids and antioxidants which are great for your general health. If you do drink black or green tea try to avoid adding milk, lemon or sugar because they decrease the health benefits of the beverage. Pre-packaged iced tea mixes are not the same as brewed tea because they often contain the same citric acids and sugars that erode enamel.
If your teeth have become sensitive to hot or cold sensations you may be experiencing tooth erosion. Please contact our office as soon as possible to explore your options.
Tips to decrease erosion:
Reduce or eliminate carbonated beverages. Instead, drink water, milk, or tea
Skip the additives such as sugar, lemon, and milk
Drink acidic drinks quickly and through a straw
Chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva flow in your mouth
Rinse with water to neutralize the acids, and wait an hour before brushing

Smokeless Tobacco and Oral Cancer
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
Smokeless tobacco and oral cancerCongratulations go out to the State of Montana for their implementation of a Clean Air Indoor Act! This legislation, according to the Billings Gazette is motivating the tobacco companies to promote smokeless tobacco as a "safe alternative to smoking"!
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention smokeless tobacco contains 28 cancer-causing agents such as polonium, formaldehyde, cadmium, cyanide, arsenic and lead.
As if it wasn't treacherous enough to our health with smoking tobacco, did you know that individuals using smokeless tobacco absorb 3 to 4 times more nicotine than their smoking counterparts?
Oral cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers diagnosed in the United States today. About 30,000 people who "dip or chew" are diagnosed with oral cancer annually. Deaths from oral cancer are in the range of 8,000 a year. If you survive the oral cancer it is usually with horrible disfiguring painful surgery.
The key to prevention is the obvious…stop using! With that in mind early detection and treatment has the potential to make a remarkable difference in the progression of any oral disease.
Today we have advanced techniques to aid in the diagnosis of oral cancer. We recommend an annual screening visually and with Vizilite. Vizilite screening consists of a solution to swish in your mouth and then scanning the oral tissues with a special light.
Please call our office today at 561-394-9000 to schedule an examination of your entire mouth to help eliminate this dreaded disease. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
