You Gotta Eat.....Thursday, January 29, 2009
You Gotta Eat!Of course because I am a dentist and a doctor we want you to have good oral health. What do we mean by "good oral health"? We can start with having teeth that are free of decay and restored properly, that your bite is correct and that your gums don't bleeding when you brush or floss.
These are the obvious points that most are aware of. Your teeth are meant to last you a lifetime, but that won't occur with you a commitment from you to take care of them.
As we age, the importance of nutrition becomes even more significant. Our ability to heal is directly related to our ability to provide our bodies with the proper nutrients. If your mouth is not healthy, if you are missing teeth, if your gums are painful; all this will minimize not only your ability to eat properly but will also take much of the joy out of eating!
The health of your mouth goes well beyond the mouth and has direct impact on the health of your entire body.
Please take the time to make an appointment with our office for a comprehensive examination and cleaning.
You won't regret the dedication to taking better care of yourself. Call our office at 561-394-9000 or an appointment today! Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
Smoking and Dental Health
Wednesday, January 28, 2009
Smoking and Dental HealthI find it quite amazing that when viewing anti-smoking literature and commercials that there is rarely the mention of the effects of smoking and your dental health. The obvious effects of tobacco use are staining of teeth and the bad breath. Not so apparent is tobaccos effect on decreasing the ability of your gums to heal, increases the severity of periodontal disease and recession of the gums. People who regularly use tobacco have a greater chance of seeing a dental implant fail due to a decreased inability to heal. Cancer is unfortunately associated with any kind of tobacco use and oral cancer is one of the fastest growing cancers in the United States today. 90% of the individual's diagnosed with oral cancer are smokers.
In order to increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, we recommend that our patient's have an annual oral cancer screening. This is done visually as well as with the aid of a diagnostic tool called Vizilite.
If it has been a while since you have had a dental examination, please call our office to schedule an appointment at 561-394-9000 Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
PURE POWER MOUTHGUARD EXPLOSION
Tuesday, January 27, 2009
PURE POWER MOUTHGUARD EXPLOSIONJust this month Rutgers University Department of Exercise Science & Sport Studies released the long awaited study about the effects of an athlete utilizing the Pure Power Mouthguard(PPM).
The study has reinforced the how effective the PPM can be in improving performance of one's individual athletic endeavors. The result demonstrated that with utilization of the PPM, vertical jumping is increased on average of 1.8 inches! Peak Power output and performance in explosive, short duration is enhanced!
We recently made a PPM for baseball player in the
L.A. Dodgers organization; his rotation improved by nearly 12 inches when he was wearing his PPM.
That is particularly important for golfers as well.
Among some of the professional athlete utilizing the PPM with successful results are Manny Ramirez, Shaq, Michelle Wie, Freddie Adu, Terrell Owen and Steve Elkington. The web site is http://www.ppmmouthguard.com/
When you are ready to take your game to a new level, call us for an appointment at 561-394-9000. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
Save Money By Taking Care of your Teeth
Monday, January 26, 2009
With the downturn in the economy everyone is looking for places to save money. There are some things that produce short-term savings but in the long run cost us more money. Getting rid of your collision coverage on the car might save a few dollars now but when somebody hits your car in a parking lot and leaves you'll be out of pocket for the repairs. The same goes for keeping your hygiene and dental appointments. Turns out that healthy teeth and gums and save you 21% on your medical costs.A study, conducted in Japan, examined the effect of periodontal disease on medical and dental costs for patients. The study was conducted over a 3 1/2 year period and the patients were between the ages of 40-59. Periodontal, or gum diseases have been linked to systemic health conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems and complications in pregnancy.
The researchers discovered that health care costs were 21% higher for the patients with severe periodontal disease than those without. While most studies have looked at health links between oral health and other medical conditions, this is the first to analyze the financial impact of poor oral hygiene.
"Everyone is looking for ways to reduce health care costs," said Susan Karabin, DDS, President of the American Academy of Periodontology. Especially those who are in an age category where they are more susceptible to periodontal diseases. Because of the relationship between the mouth and the rest of the body, treating periodontal disease may be one simple way to decrease total health care costs. If caught early, periodontal diseases can be treated using simple non-surgical techniques which can restore your mouth to a healthy state
Talk to our hygienist about your treatment options if you are diagnosed with gum disease. Early and effective treatment now can save you in health care costs down the road. Call our office at 561-394-9000 to find out more. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
IMPLANTS ARE AN ANSWER!
Wednesday, January 21, 2009
It wasn’t that long ago that the options for replacing missing teeth were either removable prosthesis such as a partial or complete denture on bridges that required drilling on healthy teeth.
When dental implants came on the scene they were questioned and suggested that they would work or last.
As it usually is the case, time tests just about everything and dental implants have proven to be everything dentistry had hoped they would be and more!
I lost a front tooth a couple of years ago and I love my implant.
Dental implants are the next best thing to having your own natural teeth. If you would like to make an appointment to discuss whether you are a candidate for dental implants, please call to arrange a consultation at 561-394-9000.
Teeth by Mt. Do?
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
TEETH by Mountain Do?Recently when I was at my youngest daughter's school I was amazed at the over whelming presence of soda and snack machines OMG! It's no wonder we are seeing an increase in cavities in high school age children.
This is a photo of a 15 year old high school student who over indulges daily on a popular soda made with large amounts of caffeine! This child will require significant amounts of dentistry which will be painstaking and expensive.
The problem with drinking soda is the sugar and acid in the beverage does major damage to the enamel on your teeth. When you sip soda, the sugar in the drink interacts with bacteria in your mouth and creates an acid. For 20 minutes, as long as it takes for your mouth to produce enough saliva to wash it away, acid is staging a siege on your teeth, attacking the enamel and eroding it.
The problem isn't solved by allowing our children to have free access to diet sodas. Although the sugary component is removed, the acid remains and to do damage to the teeth.
If you should have any questions with regards to this serious problem, please contact us at 561-394-9000.

Periodontal Disease and Your Heart Health!
Monday, January 19, 2009
We all know our physicians often check our blood for many different concerns among them cholesterol and sugar. But a recent article in the New York Times highlighting heart disease noted that the blood test for C-Reactive Protein is rarely employed. Dr. Michael Ozner, medical director of the Cardiovascular Prevention Institute of South Florida was quoted "even in people with normal cholesterol, if C-Reactive Protein is elevated, the risk of heart attack is too." He recommends that when people have there cholesterol checked, they should also be tested for C-Reactive Protein levels.
If you have questions with regards to your periodontal health, please give us a call at 561-394-9000 to schedule an appointment for a examination of your periodontium.
TOOTH LOSS AND KIDNEY DISEASE
Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Tooth Loss and Kidney DiseaseA recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology suggested that the consequences of not treating periodontal disease may be linked to chronic kidney disease.
Dr. David Cochran, the President of the American Academy of Periodontology and a professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Center Sciences at San Antonio said that treating periodontal disease can do a lot more than save your natural teeth. "Researchers have long known that gum disease is related to other adverse health conditions, and now we can consider chronic kidney disease to be one of them."
This is just another amazing fact that is being discovered to reinforce that taking care of your teeth is so important. Seeing the hygienist every 3-4 months can not only protect those pearly white but they can have an impact on your overall health.
Please call our office to make an appointment to schedule you next hygiene visit today. Faith will be glad to help you at 561-394-9000. Kenneth A. Mogell, D.M.D.
